ibc - levitate

This is my entry for the Individual Building Challenge 2. It's a 256³ fullspeed map and the special thing is, there is no grass outside of the stadium! This makes it look like the map is levitating in space.

The Challenge

From the top to the bottom and back to the top. Build a 256³ map where the start and the finish are at the highest position and one checkpoint is at the lowest position.

Building Process

When I've read the challenge, I already knew what I was going to build. I had the idea in my mind for quite some time and this was the perfect opportunity to make a map with it. An unlimiter map without any grass outside of the stadium.

The first thing I did was to write a c# library which can parse the .gbx map file format into a data model and can also write it back into a file. This api allows me to add, edit and remove blocks via code, this means I could write some code which generates blocks everywhere outside of the stadium. The grass disappears because the game doesn't display grass if there is a block at the same spot. The blocks are created with special flag values, the game doesn't know these values and can't display the blocks because of that. This makes the game display nothing at all and gives us the void effect of missing grass.

After that it was time to start mapping. I placed the start far away from the stadium and first tried to build some big wall tubes downwards but I wasn't happy with it. After a few days of frustration I decided it'll be all about smooth drops and jumps. I tried to add some variety between the jumps to keep the route interesting. Since not every one can drive SDs I built it so that it's perfectly smooth when driving without them. This sadly leads to often being too fast for the jumps when doing SDs.

Nearly 2 minutes into the route I finally reached the bottom of the building area. As a little highlight I built it so that you reach the top speed of 1000 just before the lowest point of the map. Be aware that from here on the 180° and 270° walls have higher exits than entries since I needed to gain height. The probably biggest highlight is a giant jump 3 minutes into the map which is over 7 seconds long and 73 blocks high! When validating I always found myself inside a cloud at this point. If you also happen to experience this, you will only see the car and hear the sound of the wind. I imagine this is kinda what it would feel like to levitate and I like to refer to it with this pic, which is the reason why I chose the night mood.

I finished the route at 4 minutes with a jump that makes the car fly above the building area. Next up was the scenery. This actually took a lot of time but I won't go into too much detail about it. There are some big optical highlights every few seconds and I hope it looks pleasant to you. The final block count is 69400, this includes the blocks that remove the grass (256 ^ 2 - 32 ^ 2 = 64512). The route and the scenery are therefore made out of 4888 blocks or 20202 coppers. Also, there is only 1 block mix in the route and the scenery!

To polish this work, which occupied me the last 3 weeks, I added the standard cams, help and a sweet little intro, which fits to the music of the video I made afterwards. Now it's your turn to try it out.

Thanks to everyone who was involved in this project!

I'm not precise enough for a 4 mins map with this kind of big jumps. They're not particularly hard here but 4 mins is a long time and I always fail with keeping the car straght at some spot #kbtrianproblems
